On this page you will find the pioneers of sled-dog sport and the breed in The Netherlands.

I am focusing here on the period 1965-1975, but not specifically in chronological order. As the website continues to develop, additional information will be added, not only about the teams already detailed, but also about several teams and mushers for whom I have no information available in my own files.

Liesbeth Urlus (Matanuska Kennels)

She imported Kayak Thunder Taku (Bonzo) and Vaskresenya’s Tanana Taku (Nushka) from Alaska in 1959, when she finished her career as KLM stewardess, and showed both National and International Champion with many Winner titles as well. Liesbeth continued to use the affix “Taku” for the dogs she bred.

She promoted the breed enthusiastically in the press, as well as giving demonstrations with her team at various events. We met her at one of the Winner Dog Shows in Amsterdam in the beginning of the sixties and together with Liesbeth, and many more who joined us soon after, started the breed in our country.

Leo & Gerry van Groenewegen (Naoyak Kennels)

Leo and Gerry were just about the first to join us on the beach at Noordwijk, and within a short period they had a good team going and also bred some good dogs. I imported Alaskan’s Arnak (as pup), Tsar and Laddy of Anadyr and later Tatahiarimiut of Tanaina (Tah) – who was part Seppala breeding – as trained sled-dogs for them.

Engbert & Annie Hoekstra (Chumikan Kennels)

Engbert and Annie had the whole litter from Alaskan’s Mischonak x Iglo Pak’s Grey Cloud from my parents Ton and Jet van Lierop (Seeonee Pak’s Kennels) farmed out to them, and together with their own dogs, built a very well-performing team and bred some very nice dogs out of them.

Ton and Sonja developed a highly competitive Open Class team in a very short time, running with dogs out of their own breeding program, some good trained Kolyma dogs we supplied and two Anadyr dogs I imported for them. Sonja ran their 12-dog team and trained them. Ton regularly served as a Race Marshal and contributed a lot to the development and organisation of the races.

Klaas & Loes Stapert (Navarana Kennels)

Klaas and Loes formed a creative and inventive kennel amongst us pioneers. They gave the dogs they bred (mainly Anadyr breeding) real Dutch names like Truus or Trui of Navarana (the girls) and Kees and Pieter of Navarana (the boys). Klaas had to transport his dogs in a boat to his training trails which he did at least 4 times a week! One time on his way to the Bernau race he got stuck in the snow, with his dog-box, in the garden of a German gentleman. Klaas was so frustrated that he demanded this man give him back his bicycle stolen in the war. Klaas arrived in time at the starting line but without his bike!

Leo and Adry became enthusiastic about the breed and the sport and followed with a good race team and breeding program. Adry is, together with Guus Glastra, still active in the breeding and sled-dog sport fields and fulfils positions as a board member of the SHKN breedclub and Mushing Holland. The SHKN made her an honorary member of the club, and rightfully so.

Hans & Karin Bos (Chenok Kennels)

Hans en Karin stayed active in the sport and breeding fields for a long time. Hans ran a very good Open Class team, so we let some of our best dogs go to them when we closed our kennel and they did them justice. Karin showed several of them and their own breeding program dogs as Champions.

Rik & Jikke Schaafstal (Rijiska Kennels)
Harm Jan & Gerda Scholte (Arctic Fame Kennels)

Rik en Jikke bred good dogs from our Erotica of Kolyma and Natalie of Kolyma. They took our advice and used Alaskan’s Goosack of Anadyr for a litter and he helped them build a good team and a very healthy and typical strain of dogs. Harm Jan built a very competitive Open Class team with which he participated in many races for a considerable time.

These breeders soon became part of the very enthusiastic and active Frisian mushers group and regularly trained together. They had good competitive teams and had a great impact on the progress of the breed and sport in the Netherlands, in the Central European races, as well as in the sled dog and breed clubs.

Hyls met een van zijn eerste teams

Nies & Hyls Heeringa (Komaksiut Kennels)

Nies en Hyls started with dogs from Liesbeth Urlus’ breeding program and soon aquired more trained dogs, mainly Anadyr, with which Hyls participated at the first races. Hyls discovered Tannheim (Austria) and interested the village in organising a sled-dog race, it was one of the best sled-dog races for many years. Nies was a committed board member of the SHKN breed club and was rightfully nominated Honourable Member of the SHKN.

They are still breeding and working the breed and through their dedication the Anadyr line still is well represented in Cental Europe. Hyls started to participate at the long distance races which started to be organised in Central Europe (Alpirod) and Scandinavia. Taking several days, with musher and team camping along the trail, he did very well and in the process took the breed back to their original working purpose. For some years they have taken their dogs to their cabin in North Sweden for the entire winter. Still the pioneers in many ways!

You can find them on:

Pioniers in menig opzicht dus!

Piet and Thea were definitely pioneers. Piet ran a very good B-team and they bred very good Siberian Huskies which Thea regularly showed as Champions. In the photo opposite I am placing one of their dogs first, and rightfully so. Piet contributed enormously in the organisation of our races (specifically Winterberg) and the club matches of the SHKN breed club, of which he was a member of the board for a long time. The breed club made him an honorary member, deservedly so, and he also made the first attempt to document the Siberian Husky breed in the Netherlands and Central Europe.
