Onze Beste Kolyma Honden - Our Best Kolyma Dogs
Wobask kreeg veel van zijn vader (Alaskan’s White Fox of Anadyr) de Seppala kwaliteiten mee voor wat betreft zijn vachtstructuur en uitermate vriendelijk en stabiel temperament. Ook in uitdrukking vonden we in het W-nest veel van Spot - en later in Wobask’s nesten - terug. Ze hadden fijne bolle wangen. Iets wat je soms kwijt kan raken in het ras. Sommige honden kunnen te spitse (snipy) hoofden krijgen. In Wobask zelf behielden we (ook door zijn moeder Alaskan’s Sascha of Anadyr) de goede Anadyr conformatie (schouderligging, achterhandhoeking en rangyness), maar Spot was natuurlijk zelf half Anadyr. Hij ging met Gillis of Kolyma, grote vrienden, naar Denemarken waar de Vermehrens hem Kampioen showden.
Wobask inherited many of the Seppala qualities of his Sire (Alaskan’s White Fox of Anadyr), especially his coat-structure and extremely friendly and sound temperament. These qualities we found in our W-litter and confirmed themselves in Wobask’s litters. They had nice cheeky faces, which can get lost in the breed - some Siberian Husky faces tend to get snipy (pointed). In Wobask we maintained (and credit to his dam Alaskan’s Sascha of Anadyr too) the good Anadyr conformation (shoulder- and rear-angulation, ranginess), but then Spot was himself half Anadyr. He went with Gillis of Kolyma, his big friend, to Denmark, where the Vermehrens made a Champion out of him.

Vanessa - één van de teefjes uit ons V-nest - was een apart figuur. Ik showde haar kampioen en won ook de Groep een keer met haar. Haar conformatie was echt goed, zowel in schouderligging, achterhand en rangyness. Haar uitdrukking was mooi, vachtstructuur kon beter. Vanessa was een enorme herrieschopper in onze kennel, bracht constant de boel aan het huilen. Vaak wel 10 keer per dag. We werden er helemaal dol van en - op aanraden van Dr. Lombard die dit met al zijn honden deed - hebben we haar in de kliniek in Utrecht laten debarken. Een moeilijke beslissing maar Vanes zat er zelf niet mee en na verloop van tijd herstelde haar stembanden zich een heel eind. Gelukkig was ze toen inmiddels een stuk rustiger. Ze verwende haar pups onvoorstelbaar. Die mochten werkelijk alles.
Vanessa - one of the females out off our V-litter - was a very special individual. I showed her Champion (and a Group win once) as her general conformation, her shoulder- and rear-angulation and ranginess were really excellent. She had a nice Siberian expression, although her coat structure could have been better. Vanessa was an impossible noisy dog, she had the whole kennel howling at least 10 times a day and drove us absolutely nuts. So - as advised by Dr. Lombard, who did this with all his dogs - we had her de-barked in the vets clinic in Utrecht. A difficult decision, but Vanessa did not care one bit and after a while her vocal cords mended considerably. Luckily by then she was older and a lot quieter. She spoiled her pups rotten, and they were allowed to get away with murder!
Vostok (Tok) was onze enige reu uit ons Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr with our Alaskan’s Chatka of Anadyr V-nest. De andere reu, Vladimir, was monorchide, maar onsnapte en verongelukte.
Tok was een harde werker, vooral als wheel- of teamhond. Hij was goed binnen de standaard gelukkig en had dezelfde goed conformatie en behoorlijke vachtstructuur als zijn nestzusjes en hezelfde sound en vriendelijke temperament. Een beetje een boerenkoppie vond ik. Hij had de eigenschap om alsmaar rechtsom te ijsberen en alleen onze Ch. Alaskan’s Sha-Luk-King of Anadyr (Red) werd daar niet kriegel van. Toch stopten we Tok vaak een tijdje alleen in een kennel gedurende de dag, daar liep hij niemand in de weg met zijn gedender. Tok kon daarom ook het best links in het team staan, want dat hield hem goed centraal.
Daarnaast had hij een heerlijke eigenschap: hij was absoluut dól op pups en we lieten hem dan ook heel veel bij de nesten in de puppykennels. Ook al waren ze nog maar net geboren. Alle moeders waren erg blij met hem, hij had een eindeloos geduld. Hij hielp ze schoonmaken en de buikjes masseren om de ontlasting opgang te brengen en speelde eindeloos met ze. Dank zij Tok had moeders even fijn rust. Heerlijk was dat om te zien en zo'n Oomreu er tussen te hebben!
Vostok (Tok) was the only surviving male out of our V-litter, from Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr and our Alaskan’s Chatka of Anadyr. The other male, Vladimir, was a monorchid and was killed when he escaped.
Tok was a hard worker as a wheel- or team-dog. He was well within the standard luckily and had the same good conformation and sufficient coat structure as his litter sisters. His head was a little “common” I felt. He had the attitude to pace endlessly in right-hand circles in the pen. Our Ch. Alaskan’s Sha-Luk-King of Anadyr (Red) was the only dog who blissfully ignored this but we often kennelled Tok alone during periods of the day so that he could do “his thing” to his heart’s desire! He was best hooked up on the left side in the team because as this kept him well centralized.
He had a wonderful character trait: he simply loved pups and young dogs, no matter what age. We penned him up for long periods with new litters, even when they were just born. He helped clean them, carefully massage their little bellies and the mother dogs more than welcomed him. His patience with the pups was endless, he would play and have fun with them till they tumbled off to sleep. Meanwhile mum would be able to catch a few hours of rest herself. It is wonderful to have such an “uncle dog” in the kennel!

Valerie (Fatso) was één van Lews twee beste leidershonden in zijn team. Zowel single als dubbel lead was ze top. Ze was goed binnen de standaard, had een mooie vacht en - zoals het hele V-nest - echt goede hoekingen en lengte in rug. Haar hoofd kon wel iets typischer zijn vond ik. Iets te spits in voorsnuit. Fatso (ze had een gewichts-probleem, vandaar!) was goed gezond en werkte keihard. Hier moesten we haar tegen zichzelf beschermen, ze kon zich makkelijk overnemen en in dat proces de rest van het team achter haar. Ze had nl. maar één doel: de teams vóór haar op de trail inhalen en er voorbij. En inhalen kon ze: eenmaal naast het ingehaalde team zoveel ruimte voor haar team nemend als de trail toestond en vervolgens maximaal versnellen om er langs te komen zodat er geen problemen konden ontstaan. We hebben haar dat nooit geleerd, ze ontdekte dit zelf. Een pure wedstrijdhond dus. Dat wilde wel eens ingewikkeld worden want dat was natuurlijk niet altijd nodig of de bedoeling. Ik heb haar dus nooit in lead gebruikt in mijn wedstrijdjes. Ik was meer van het gezellig mee doen in de B klasse maar dat zag Valerie helemaal niet zitten. Een speciaal nummer deze Chakta/Astro dochter!
Valerie (Fatso) was one of the best lead-dogs in Lew’s team, in single, as well as double lead, she was top dog. She was well within the breed standard, had a good coat and - as did the whole V-litter - had good angulation and back length, although her expression could have been better in my opinion. Fatso (she had a weight problem, hence her nickname) was a healthy dog and worked her head off. We had to protect her in this respect, as she easily over-extended herself (and the rest of the team behind her) as she had only one goal, catching the teams ahead of her on the race trails and overtaking them. Valerie was an expert in this, once alongside another team she would take as much space for her team as the trail would allow and really speed up to make a fast pass, thus avoiding problems. We never taught her that, she figured that out for herself. A true race dog, she was so single-minded, but this became complicated every now and then, because there was not always the need or intention. For that reason I never used her in lead in the small races I participated in. I was out there to have a good time, sight-seeing in the B-class, but that was not Valerie’s cup of tea. A special one, this daughter of Chatka and Astro!

Yaddam was de beste hond uit ons Y nest. Goed formaat en hoekingen, goede vacht en goed typisch hoofd. Harde werker, goed in lead te gebruiken in training. Lew heeft hem ook in wedstrijden in lead gebruikt. Hele stabiele hond in temperament ook - onverstoorbaar - en daarin stabieler dan zijn moeder/dam. Ook in hoofd en vacht was daar een verbetering. De credit hiervoor gaat naar Spot (Alaskan’s White Fox of Anadyr), zijn vaders Seppala achtergrond. Zijn nestgenoten hadden dezelfde kwaliteiten en hebben het in de fokkerij en harnas prima gedaan. Daar waren we blij mee. Op Yacka hebben we een fokverbod gezet zag ik op het nestregistratie formulier, maar ik kan me niet meer herinneren wat de reden daarvan was. Jammer. Yaddam heeft in de laatste jaren van zijn leven Adry den Ouden geholpen haar jonge honden in het harnas in te breken.
Yaddam was the best dog out of our Y-litter. Good conformation and angulation, with a good coat and expression. A hard worker, and very useful in lead in training, Lew used him in lead in some races as well. Very stable in temperament, totally unperturbed, he was certainly more stable then his dam. In his expression and coat structure there was improvement as well. Credit for this went to his sire’s (Alaskan’s White Fox of Anadyr) Seppala background. His litter-mates had the same qualities and did well in breeding and harness. We were happy with that. I noticed on the litter registration form that we put a breed-stop on his sister Yacka, but I don't remember the reason for that - a pity, as Yaddam proved very helpful to Adry den Ouden to break her young dogs in harness.

Vainina (Nina) ran single lead most frequently of all our race competition leaders, she was exceptionally disciplined, with good trail sense and absolute obedience to Lew’s commands. These commands included speeding the team up or slowing down, GeeOK and HawOK (the commands to pass a team on the right or left side) and GeeLittle or HawLittle for taking a turn at a gentle angle. Nina was happiest when she ran single lead and did not consider this an additional pressure, as she could stay ahead of the team at her ease and pace herself, and the team, by keeping the same speed and rhythm. She was the absolute super-dog for Lew, he could “read and write” with her in lead (as the Dutch saying goes!). We considered Nina the best dog we ever bred.
Vainina (Nina) heeft het meeste van al onze honden in single lead gelopen in de wedstrijden. Uitermate gediciplineerd, goed trail gevoel en volstrekt gehoorzaam aan Lew in haar commandos. Dat gold ook voor het versnellen of snelheid terugnemen en GeeOK en HawOK (het commando voor links of rechts passeren van een team) en GeeLittle of HawLittle om op een splitsing met meerdere afslagen niet de direct rechts of links te nemen maar de andere schuinere optie. Nina was het gelukkigs in single lead en voelde dit ook niet als druk. Ze kon het team makkelijk voorblijven zichzelf en het team goed in hetzelfde tempo en cadans houden en zichzelf niet te overnemen. Ze was gewoon een superhond voor Lew, hij kon lezen en schrijven met haar voorop. We beschouwden Nina de beste hond die we gefokt hebben.

Gillis is qua conformatie en uiterlijk een van onze meest complete reuen geweest die we gefokt hebben. We gebruikten hem regelmatig in lead en hij had een goed sound temperament. We lieten hem samen met Wobask naar Denemarken - de Vermehrens kennel - gaan. Dr. Roland Lombard wilde hem voor zijn fokkerij gebruiken maar Gillis stierf triest genoeg, voordat dat plaats kon vinden.
Gillis was one of our most complete and best male dogs, in both conformation and exterior appearance, that we bred. We used him regularly in lead and he had a very good temperament. We let him go with Wobask to Denmark, to the Vermehrens kennel. Dr. Roland Lombard intended to use him for breeding, but unfortunately Gillis died before that could take place.

Kaltag was an outstanding dog, in every aspect the best out of our K-litter. Good temperament and drive, nicely proportioned and in balance for back length (ranginess), shoulder- and rear-angulation and well within the breed standard. Peter Thomann put him in single lead in front of a 13-dog team in races before Kaltag was even two years old. It did not seem to bother Kaltag, but it worried us considerably.
As previously mentioned, Kaltag was a monorchid, but again, Peter Thomann did not consider that a problem for using him in his breeding program. “He is better than his sire” Peter stated. We doubted this, but even so, in our opinion if the sire of a monorchid dog - no matter how good - was still living and available for breeding, his monorchid son should not be used in breeding as monorchism is strongly heredary. As using monorchid dogs for breeding was prohibited in Swiss Kennel Club rules, as well as breed club regulations, in first instance the offspring was denied their official recognized pedigrees. Subsequent veterinarian research on Kaltag established that his “missing” testicle was actually present, but not fully decended into the scrotum, and after a lengthy process, Kaltag’s offspring were granted their official pedigrees because of this fact.
Kaltag was exeptioneel goede hond. In ieder opzicht de beste van het K-nest. Temperament, werkwilligheid, mooi in verhouding voor wat betreft rug lengte, schouderligging, achterhand hoekingen. En goed binnen de rasstandaard. Hij werd nog vóór zijn 2e jaar door Peter Thomann als enkele leidershond voor zijn 13 honden team in wedstrijden ingezet. De hond leek daar geen problemen mee te hebben maar wij waren daar niet echt gelukkig mee natuurlijk.
Zoals aangegeven, Kaltag was monorchide. Ook hier had Peter Thomann geen problemen mee en zette Kaltag in de voor de fokkerij. “Hij is een betere hond dan zijn vader” was Peter’s argument. Wij hadden daar onze vraagtekens bij, we waren van mening dat als de vader/Sire nog leeft en inzetbaar is, een monorchide zoon, hoe goed ook, niet gefokt moet worden monorchise me is sterk erfelijk). Het fokken van monorchide honden was binnen de Zwitserse Kennelclub en de rasvereniging niet toegestaan en dus werden de pups de officiële stambomen in eerste instantie onthouden. Later werd veterinair vastgesteld dat zijn “ontbrekende” testikel wel aanwezig was maar niet voldoende ingedaald in het scrotum. Om deze reden werden, na een lang proces de stambomen alsnog aan de pups uit Kaltag toegekend.
Oleta zelf was praktisch gesproken het resultaat van een onverwante paring. Haar vader Alaskan’s Goosak of Anadyr, kwam uit de Ch. Alaskan’s Bonzo of Anadyr lijn, terwijl haar moeder Vainina of Kolyma een Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr dochter, was maar zelf niet uit een lijnteelt combinatie aan de Astro/Nicolai zijde. Dat maakte Oleta genetisch zo waardevol voor ons. Dichte lijnteelt geeft vaak verlies aan vitaliteit, afgezien nog van het risico dat eventueel aanwezige genetische afwijkingen sterk naar voren kunnen komen. Niet verwante paringen en verre lijnteelt houdt een ras en een bloedlijn gezond en vitaal. Wel zal je wat uniformiteit verliezen maar gezondheid moet het belangrijkste zijn in je fokkerij.
Oleta heeft ons twee goede nesten gegeven. Het I-nest met Vostok of Kolyma was goed, haar G-nest met Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr vonden we uitzonderlijk goed. Toen ze ouder werd hebben we haar uitgeleend aan een B-team waar ze het goed deed. Daarna werd ze een gezellige huishond!
Oleta actually was the result of an almost complete out-cross. Her sire, Alaskan’s Goosak of Anadyr, came out off the Ch. Alaskan’s Bonzo of Anadyr line, while Oleta’s dam, Vainina of Kolyma was an Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr daughter, but not out of the complete line-bred lineage back into the Astro/Nicolai genes. That made Oleta genetically such a valuable dog for us. Close line-breeding often results in loss of vitality, apart from the risk of getting genetic faults more pronounced in the offspring. Non-related breeding/out-crosses and distant line-breeding keeps a breed healthy and vital. One might loose uniformity in the litter, but health should always be the most important factor in ones breeding program.
Oleta gave us two good litters. The I-litter out of Vostok of Kolyma was good. Her G-litter out of Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr was outstanding in our opinion. When Oleta got older we farmed her out to a B-team, where she did well. Afterwards she became a sweet house pet!

Met Libby waren we werkelijk op het goede spoor in ons fokprogramma. Ze was een rangy, goed rastype en excellent bewegende hond door haar prachtige schouder-ligging en achterhand hoekingen. Goed evenwichtig temperament en een uitnemend geconcentreerde werkhond, die makkelijk met de snelste honden in het team mee kon. Ze kon in lead zowel enkel- als dubbel lead en vond het heerlijk. Zette je haar terug in het team om de druk er af te halen, geen probleem voor haar. Werkte net zo hard.
We fokte haar met Spook en – gezien de kwaliteit van het E-nest, herhaalde de combinatie in ons Z-nest. Beide nesten gaven ons alles waarop we gehoopt hadden in onze fokkerij.
De opvoeding van haar nest was een uitzonderlijke ervaring voor ons. Ze deed het prima - pups kwamen niets tekort en waren kerngezond – maar ze was zo'n bar strenge moeder. Maar mensenkinderen, wat was dit spul gedisciplineerd en excellente werkers in harnas, complete natuurtalenten, met alle conformatie, beweging en snelheid die je kon wensen in je team.
Samen met Emily of Kolyma is ze uiteindelijk naar Inger Hedegaard gegaan toen we ophielden met onze kennel. Inger heeft Libby nog twee keer gefokt.
With Libby we really were on the right track in our breeding program. She was rangy, typy and an excellent mover because of her shoulder- and rear-angulation. She had a good sound temperament and was an extremely good concentrated worker, matching the speed and movement of our best dogs. She would run lead, both single- and double and loved it. But putting her back in the team to take the pressure off her, she would still work equally hard. We bred her with Spook for our E-litter and repeated the breeding for our Z-litter. In both litters she gave us all we hoped and wished for in our breeding program.
Bringing up her pups was a very special experience for us. She did a very good job, her pups got everything they needed and were very healthy, but she was such a severe mother with their education. But boy were these little guys disciplined and beautiful workers in harness! Pure naturals, with all the conformation, speed and movement you could wish for in your team. Together with Emily of Kolyma we let her go to Inger Hedegaard when we closed our kennel. She was bred twice by Inger if I am not mistaken.

Talitta heeft het echt goed gedaan in Karsten Gronnas Open class team en hij heeft haar drie keer gefokt met Can. Ch. Peik (av Vargavass) en twee van zijn andere bestereuen (een zoon va Iglo Pak’s Wing) dus Karsten moet tevreden zijn geweest met haar pups. Hij heeft mij verschillende fotos van Talitta gestuurd waar ze in single lead loopt voor zijn Open Klas teams dus ook daar moet ze een hond geweest zijn waar Karsten tevreden over was.
Talitta did very well in Karsten Gronnas team and he used her for breeding with Can. Ch. Peik (of Vargavass) and two other of his best males (one a son of Iglo Pak’s Wing) so Karsten must have been happy with her offspring. He sent me several pictures of Talitta running single lead of his Open Class teams, so she must have been a dog Karsten was satisfied with.

Emmitt & Emily of Kolyma
ons E-nest - our E-litter
Emmitt and Emily came very close to what we were after in our breeding program. “Just another dull grey dog” Natalie Norris would have said, but who cares? They had the temperament, drive and conformation which matched their dam Liberty of Kolyma and grandmother Vainina of Kolyma
Emmitt’s ears were rather big, but Lew said “Well, if I teach him to flap, before you know it he will become airborne, which will speed the team up even more!” What else can you expect of a KLM pilot musher? Both did very well in breeding and performed very well in the Open teams of Inger Hedegaard and Axel Vermehren in Denmark.
Emmitt en Emily kwamen dicht bij waar we op uit waren in ons fokprogramma. “Weer een paar saaie grijze honden “zou Natalie Norris gezegd hebben maar hoezo? Beiden hadden het temperament, de drive en conformatie die overeen kwam met die van hun moeder Liberty of Kolyma en hun grootmoeder Vainina of Kolyma.
Emmitt’s oren waren nogal groot. Lews commentaar “Ik leer hem ze goed te flappen, voor je het weet gaat hij vliegen en het team zal alleen maar sneller gaan!” Hun musher was een KLM vlieger dus wat wil je? Beiden hebben het heel goed gedaan in de fokkerij en Openklas teams van Inger Hedegaard en Axel Vermehren In Denemarken.

Laddy ging naar Axel Vermeherns kennel toen hij een jaar oud was. Hier zie je hem naast Gillis of Kolyma in lead. Axel was tevreden over hem en heeft hem regelmatig als leidershond gebruikt en een aantal nesten uit hem gefokt. Ik ben nog steeds trots op alledrie.
Laddy went to Axel Vermehrens kennel when a year old. Here he is running in his team in double lead with Gillis of Kolyma. Axel was happy with him and used him in lead and bred several litters out off him too. I am still very proud of them all.
